March 2003 | Markus (CNNreporter.com exclusive)

Peter Bergen, CNN's terrorism analyst really was very kind and gave us some time to answer some questions we wanted to ask him. Markus [CNNFan] interviewed him.

What is your most memorable moment at CNN?

Peter Bergen:
The interview with Bin Laden for CNN in Eastern Afghanistan in 1997. At this time I was a producer, and I was there with Peter Arnett. Bin Laden layed out all the reasons why he is attacking the United States. It was the first time he has done a television interview.

Name your favorite author and/or your favorite book.

Peter Bergen:
That's a tough one. I have a lot of favorite books. Now I am reading Steven Coll - Ghost Wars. It tells the story of the CIA's involvement in Afghanistan from the invasion of the Soviets in 1979 up until the 9/11 attacks.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life?

Peter Bergen:
People in my own family and the teachers who taught me history at highschool in Northern England.

Name one thing you couldn't live without.
Peter Bergen: Music
What group or style?
Peter Bergen: No specific style or group. Absolutely everything, from Classic to Reggea.

Which CNN do you like the most and why?

Peter Bergen:
I watch a lot of CNN International when I am on the road, so probably I watch CNNI the most, but I can't tell what i prefer more. On CNN USA I like to watch AC 360 and Paula Zahn Now. Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer is very good. Wolf Blitzer is a really smart guy. On CNN International I like Jonathan Mann.

How did you become a terrorism analyst for CNN?

Peter Bergen:
I started for CNN in 1990 as a producer in the investigative unit. Then there was the WTC bombing in 1993. For that in 1993 I travelled to Afghanistan and did a documentary in Afghanistan and then I interviewed Bin Laden. Then the bombing of the US embassies happened, later the U.S.S. Cole attack. Then 9/11 came and then CNN made me a permanent terrorist analyst.

When a War on Terror-related news story breaks, what are the first things that you do, and what are your first thoughts?

Peter Bergen:
Usually when there's a big story I get a call from CNN on my cell phone. I just come when they want me on the set and try to speak. Generally speaking, it's not that difficult to talk about these kind of topics, I covered these stories for so long.

Are you making a documentary for CNN now or in the coming future regarding terrorism related stories?

Peter Bergen:
No, i don't make a documentary, some of my colleagues do that, they ask me sometimes to help out.

Finally, what do you think of CNNreporter.com?

Peter Bergen:
I checked it out, you've done a really good job.

Thanks to you for the interview, we'll see you on CNN.

Peter Bergen: Thanks very much for the interview, Markus, Goodbye.
